What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is commonly referred to as “sleep dentistry,” but this term is misleading. While some patients do doze off during their procedures, most remain awake but in a calm, sedated state.
In sedation dentistry, a sedative is coupled with local anesthesia as necessary to eliminate discomfort for patients who experience anxiety during dental work.
True “sleep” dentistry would be performed under general anesthesia. This is the only form of sedation that leads to a complete loss of consciousness from which a patient cannot easily be woken. General anesthesia comes with some risks, but these are avoided with sedation.
Although some extensive or invasive dental surgery may be performed under general anesthesia, this is not the norm. Nearly everything we do at Sanchez Dental can be completed while the patient is under light to moderate sedation.
The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is highly beneficial as it allows the patient to experience painless, anxiety-free treatment. This is valuable for several reasons:
- The patient can endure longer periods in the chair, meaning that procedures can be completed in one or two sessions rather than broken up across multiple appointments.
- Patients can alleviate their anxiety and have a more positive experience.
- When patients lack anxiety about the dentist’s office, they’re more likely to seek help when needed and maintain their oral health.
For the dentists at Sanchez Dental, the comfort of our patients is a top concern. We care deeply about the well-being of every person we treat – not just their physical health, but also emotional. We want you to have a positive experience as you begin this new chapter in your life, and we’re happy to offer any tools we can to make that possible.
