“Periodontal” refers to the gums, or tissue surrounding the base of your teeth. Healthy gums are an important aspect of good dental health. They can also affect the appearance of your smile. At Sanchez Dental, we provide a variety of periodontal procedures to improve the look of your gums as well as improving your overall periodontal health.
Types of Periodontal Treatments
There are two main types of periodontal treatments: Treatments for correcting gum disease and cosmetic procedures to improve the appearance of the gums themselves.
Gum Disease Treatments
Gingivitis, or the inflammation of gum tissue, occurs when bacteria from plaque begin to invade and infect the gums. Left untreated, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis, which causes the gum to recede from the teeth and form pockets, which can become easily infected. This eventually can affect the underlying bone and connective tissues.
Gum disease treatments are aimed at the removal of plaque and destruction of the bacteria before infections can worsen. Procedures include scaling, root planning, pocket reduction surgery and, in severe cases, other types of oral surgery to remove damaged tissue and promote regeneration.
Sometimes, even healthy gum tissue can be a nuisance. Many people have excessive amounts of gum tissue, giving the appearance of undersized teeth. This can be corrected with a crown-lengthening procedure, which removes the excess gum tissue and makes the teeth appear longer. Recessed gums can also be treated with a soft tissue graft, which covers the tooth roots and slows natural gum recession.
