At Sanchez Dental, we specialize in sedation dentistry – sometimes called sleep dentistry. Sedation allows people who may otherwise avoid the dentist to relax and overcome their anxiety in order to receive life-changing restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Helping people become their best selves through dentistry is our passion, and we’re happy to be Albuquerque’s “Sedation Guys!”
Is Oral Sedation the Same as Anesthesia?
Although sedation dentistry is sometimes called “sleep dentistry,” it is not the same as general anesthesia. When a patient is anesthetized, he is unconscious and totally unaware of his surroundings. When sedated, a patient remains awake but deeply relaxed.
Because sedation does not have the same neuro-suppressing effect as anesthesia, it does not have the risks associated with general anesthesia. Sedation is safe, effective, and a great solution for people who experience anxiety in the dentist’s chair!
How Does Oral Conscious Sedation Work?
Several different drugs can be used as sedatives. In the dentist’s office, sedation can be delivered through inhalation (nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas) or orally in pill form. Oral sedatives include diazepam, lorazepam and hydroxyzine.
The dentists at Sanchez Dental are certified by the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS) and pursue continuing education and learning in order to stay up-to-date on techniques and medications to ensure the safety and effectiveness of our treatments.
The comfort of our patients is our top priority. If you have any questions about our sedation dentistry services or would like to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced dentists, contact us today!
