How Do Oral Sedatives for Dentistry Work?

The dentists at Sanchez Dental are sedation dentistry specialists. With a certification from the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS) and 20 years of experience in the field, we are Albuquerque’s “Sedation Guys” – and we’re proud to use our treatment to help people overcome their anxieties and receive the dental treatments they need!

If you’ve avoided going to the dentist in the past because of fear, or if you’re looking for a way to have a more relaxing experience in the dentist’s chair, conscious oral sedation may be right for you.

How is Sedation Different from Anesthesia?

Although it’s sometimes called “sleep dentistry” or “twilight anesthesia,” sedation dentistry does not put a patient under total anesthesia. When under anesthesia, you are unconscious and totally unaware of your surroundings. Under sedation, you will be awake but deeply relaxed. Some patients become drowsy or dose off, but they can be easily woken.

Are Oral Sedatives Safe?

When delivered by an experienced dentist, conscious sedation is highly safe and effective. It does not pose the same risks as general anesthesia, and we will take care to ensure you receive exactly the right dosage to reach the right level of sedation.

What Can You Expect?

Several drugs can be used as oral sedatives. All are taken in pill form and take some time to activate in your system. After you take your sedative, you will have a chance to relax and read a magazine or watch TV until the sedative kicks in. At that point, we can begin the dental procedure. Once it’s finished, we’ll move you into a recovery room until you are able to go home. You will need someone to drive you home after your appointment.
